PETE OLIVER RIP

"Deeply saddened by the news tonight that the great Pete Oliver has passed away in Benidorm. With a career spanning the decades from the late 60's with Sweet Chariot, moving on to many TV appearances and as a regular
headliner at all the Blackpool top venues, Pete was nothing short of
legendary. A dear friend for over 20 years and a regular at our Music Hall Tavern and All Hands on Deck, he will be missed.

Thoughts and prayers are with his widow Laverne, daughters Mercedes and Samantha and all his family and loved ones

God Bless Pete, Joe and James

BIRMINGHAM MAIL INTERVIEW JANUARY 2015

Singer Joe Longthorne: 'I sang Danny Boy in my hospital bed after 10 hour operation' by Roz Laws

The singer has chosen Birmingham's New Alexandra Theatre to make his comeback after twice battling cancer.
Singer Joe Longthorne has battled back from cancer not once but twice. Now he’s looking forward to his first full concert since a life-saving operation five months ago – and he’s chosen to make his comeback in Birmingham.

He takes to the stage of the New Alexandra Theatre after recovering from a tumour in his throat which he feared may stop him singing again.

Joe, 59, had a 10-hour operation in July. It’s the second time he’s had major surgery, after a bone marrow transplant in 2006 which finally saw off the leukaemia he had been fighting for 20 years.

He says: “It’s been a very tough time. The transplant seemed easier than recovering from this operation.

“They told me not to talk after I came round but I had to see whether I could sing again, so the day after surgery I sang Danny Boy in my hospital bed. It was such a relief that I could still sing.

“It was a shock having the cancer diagnosis, but I knew I had beaten it before and I could again.

“The prognosis is good, I see my specialist once a month but it’s up to me now to get up on stage again.

“I’ve been doing lots of throat exercises and I’ve made a couple of public appearances, but I’ve not had a full concert since the op.

“I chose to start my new tour at the Alex in Birmingham which is a very special theatre to me. I’ve played all the venues in Birmingham but the Alex is a favourite, I’ve been going there for 30 years.

“I’ve really missed the connection with an audience and entertaining people.

“I’m a bit nervous about going back on stage but I’m excited too. Maybe I should do some singing in the street first to warm up – well, I did use to busk around Hull as a teenager!

“I’m looking forward to things and it’s all looking good. The bookings have been coming in left, right and centre but I want to ease myself back in and not take on too many venues.

“I’m working up to a major concert at the London Palladium on May 31 to mark my 60th birthday.”

Joe says he feels ‘fortunate’,despite being struck down with such ill health.

His first cancer battle began in 1982 when he was diagnosed with lymphoma, which developed into leukaemia. Then this year he found a lump in his throat.

He lives in Blackpool with his manager and partner James Moran but was born in Hull as the son of travellers. He landed a part on Junior Showtime at the age of 14.

He made his name by doing singing impersonations, particularly of Shirley Bassey which won him Search For A Star and his own ITV series.

Dame Shirley has said of him: “Joe can do me better than I can do myself.”

Joe Longthorne plays Birmingham’s New Alexandra Theatre on January 22 and Lichfield Garrick on February 7.

NEWS UPDATE ON JOE AND THE JANUARY SHOWS

Joe is looking forward to his return to the stage tomorrow 22nd January 2015 at The New Alexandra Theatre Birmingham. However, Joe has been advised by his doctors to still take it easy and not do too many shows back to back as this could jeopardise his recovery, they have asked Joe to cut down his performances in January. Due to his operation most of the 2014 dates were rescheduled into 2015, with 7 of them for January 2015 back to back. The doctors suggested doing 3 out of the 7 shows so that he eases himself back into working and singing. With the huge operation that Joe had last year, Joe & Jamie have discussed this with their team and everyone has agreed that Joe should work his way into touring again instead of full steam ahead.

The shows that have been cancelled are Watford 23rd Jan and Eastbourne 24th Jan.

Birmingham, Southend, Croydon and Clacton are all scheduled to go ahead. Lincoln has been rescheduled to Friday 13th March 2015 and High Wycombe has been moved to Saturday 27th June 2015.

Everyone feels that Joe has to take the advice from his doctors and is deeply sorry that these dates have been cancelled or rescheduled, but all the venues have been sympathetic and we are sure like everyone here at the office that this is for the best, as the main man’s health is more important and we don’t want anything happening to that golden voice that we all know and love.

For the 2 rescheduled dates the original tickets should be valid, but please check with point of sale to clarify the situation.
