'NATURAL TALENT'- THE STAGE REVIEW ON A YOUNG JOE LONGTHORNE 42 YEARS AGO NOVEMBER 16 1978

From The Stage :-

In 1978, our then editor Peter Hepple wrote a review celebrating the emerging talent of entertainer Joe Longthorne, who died in August last year, aged 64. Now, as a tribute, Blackpool North Pier’s manager has said that the pier’s theatre will be renamed after him. Forty-two years ago, we reported on Longthorne’s performance at Quaglino’s in London:

“If there is anything certain in this world, it is a continuing supply of impressionists. But only the best go to greater things and one young man who looks like a sure survivor is 22-year-old Joe Longthorne, from Hull.

“What makes him a likely winner? Well, natural talent for one thing, in the form of an excellent singing voice, highly saleable on its own merits. Another is his bounce and confidence, almost remarkable in one so young, faced with a typical late-night audience at Quaglino’s, a mixed-nationality crowd who have come to eat and perhaps dance rather than watch cabaret.

“A third feature is that he has obviously prepared his act with some care, for he mixes the unsubtle, including the use of wigs and dresses, with the fairly sophisticated. Wigs and dresses? This is where his originality comes in, for he impersonates female singers as well as men. An outstandingly good Dorothy Squires, a not quite so accurate but still highly effective Shirley Bassey and Cleo Laine.”

BLACKPOOL’S NORTH PIER THEATRE RENAMED IN HONOUR OF THE LATE JOE LONGTHORNE MBE

The Sedgwick family, owners of Blackpool’s world famous North Pier, are to dedicate and rename the pier’s theatre ‘The Joe Longthorne MBE Theatre’ , in honour of the late entertainer who sadly passed away on 3rd August 2019 at his home in Blackpool.

Joe’s husband, Jamie Moran, has been in discussion with the Sedgwick family for some months about their plans and is deeply honoured that Joe, one of the greatest all time entertainers, is to be remembered and celebrated in this way.

The ‘Grade 2’ listed pier and it’s theatre held a huge place of affection in Joe’s heart. He starred in his first summer season there in 1987 followed by many record breaking seasons over the years and even took up residence once in his dressing room for a few months; he simply loved the feel of the theatre right at the end of the pier looking out on the Irish Sea. His huge army of fans would make regular trips to see Joe on the North Pier and it was widely known that this was Joe’s all time favourite venue to perform.

We are also pleased to announce that ‘The Joe Longthorne MBE Museum’, adjacent to the theatre, is to open. This will house Joe’s beloved Grand Piano, his MBE award from HM The Queen and Honorary Degree from The Open University, his Gold and Silver Discs, Variety Club awards together with many other awards and accolades. On display will be Joe’s full stage attire and a collection of many other personal effects highlighting his 52 year long career as an Entertainer, including an extensive display of posters and programmes and other memorabilia.

It will be open with free admission throughout the summer months and ,with a tea room added for light refreshments, it will be the perfect place for fans to spend an hour or two on their visit to Blackpool. Joe’s huge catalogue of music and filmed concerts will be played constantly during the opening hours.

Peter Sedgwick Snr and his family are very honoured that they have been offered Joe’s memorabilia to display in their Theatre. “Joe was very proud of the North Pier and we are sure he would be thrilled that the Theatre is going to be named after him. Joe Longthorne MBE really was a true legend and it will be a pleasure to bring Joe back to his favourite theatre for his loyal fans and of course for wonderful Blackpool.’

Jamie and the Longthorne family together with the Sedgwick family will officially open the Theatre and Museum at a VIP event on Saturday 30th May 2020.

On the following day Sunday May 31st 2020, which would have been Joe’s 65th Birthday, an all star gala evening is to held in his honour at ‘The Joe Longthorne MBE Theatre.’ More details to be announced very soon.
