"The Night The Stars Came Out"
Published June 18 2015 UK Cabaret by Mark Ritchie
Whenever I get asked, what has been the highlight of my career, without any thought or hesitation, I immediately reply “Touring as support act to the great showbiz legend Joe Longthorne”
So when I was invited to attend his 60th birthday celebration, I jumped at the opportunity to be amongst the many that had travelled far and wide to be present at a most memorable occasion.
Among the many ways that he has been recognised for his contribution to show biz Joe deservedly was presented with ‘The Lifetime Achievement Award’ in 2007.
At the age of 14 Joe was a regular face on T.V’s ‘Junior Showtime’ he then went on to perform in the northern working men’s club, which lead him on to a successful showbiz career that the majority of performers can only dream about.
Now here he was on his 60th birthday back at what is probably the most famous venue in the world ‘The London Palladium.’ Presented by ‘Artistes International Management’
When introduced by none other than the great Liverpool comic Jimmy Tarbuck the 25 piece orchestra under the leadership of Joes musical director Steven ‘stretch’ Price struck up the first note and the entire audience were on their feet as the man himself stepped onto the stage, he looked immaculate and if you didn’t know you would never have guessed that the man who stood there acknowledging everyone that had packed the auditorium before he stepped up to the microphone, had spent more than half his life battling cancer.
The performance Joe gave was second to none as he took us through the timeless classics paying tribute with his impersonations to fellow showbiz greats including David Bowie, Shirley Bassey and Frank Sinatra.
With 3 lovely ladies providing backing vocals, Joe invited the extremely talented vocalist Tracey Jordan to join him up front as they jointly paid tribute to Neil Diamond and Barbara Streisand with the old classic ‘You don’t bring me flowers.’ I was fortunate to be sat in the auditorium behind Tracie’s father, I am sure at that moment there was not a prouder man in the whole world.
With too many famous names to mention in the auditorium, amongst them was the writer of one of my favourite numbers ‘If I never sing another song’ Don Black.
This was the tune that Joe decided to finish with and when he hit that very last note the whole of the audience were on their feet giving him a well deserved standing ovation like no other that I have ever witnessed in my entire life.
The stars truly came out to pay tribute to one of the greatest performers that the world of showbiz has ever produced.

Entertainer Joe Longthorne MBE has celebrated his 60th birthday at a star-studded event in London, with a little help from his Hull friends. The singing sensation, whose career spans more than 30 years, celebrated his birthday at the London Palladium, with stars including Johnnie Casson, Darren Day, Ricky Tomlinson and Jimmy Tarbuck. The Hessle Roader sang for 90 minutes with a 26-piece orchestra.
Following the event, it was down to Hull singers Martin Jackson, Leroy Vickers and Michael Thomas, known collectively as Tre Amici, to sing at the after-show party, which was held at the Hippodrome Casino in London.
Mr Longthorne, who handpicked Tre Amici for the event, told his guests: "I would like to thank everyone who came together for the show, especially my good friend Jimmy Tarbuck OBE who made the show extra special, also Johnnie, Darren and Ricky."
"It was quite moving to see everyone there, especially all the fans from Hull who made the journey just for me. The concert had been a long time in the planning and it made my birthday extra special. The Palladium is a favourite theatre of mine and it's always good to go back there”
"Leroy and the boys performed with perfection and I would like to thank them sincerely, great voices and great talent."
Tre Amici performed for Mr Longthorne just days before they took part in the Mail's Star Search competition at the Wheatsheaf pub in Kirk Ella – finishing joint first in the heat.
Mr Vickers, 32, of east Hull, said: "It was amazing singing at the famous Hippodrome in front of 600 people and being part of Joe's 60th birthday.
"It was a good chance to practice three of the songs we were going to sing at Star Search."
Mr Vickers said Mr Longthorne put on an amazing performance at the Palladium.
"It was the best performance from him I have seen in ten years," he said.
"What was overwhelming to see, was how much support there was for Joe in London from Hull."
"He deserves it. What he's done for local music has been amazing. He's put Hull on the map."
Mr Vickers said the performance has already had a positive impact on Tre Amici.
"Since the show we've had people adding us on Twitter and famous faces from EastEnders and musicians saying our performance was mind-blowing," he said. They have also been asked to perform at the Powerboat P1, dubbed the "grand prix of the sea", at Gosport, on a bill that includes Professor Green "It could be great for us,"said Mr Vickers. "Performing at the Powerboat P1 is massive for us. As for the plans for the future, we are also planning for our appearance in the Mail's Star Search semi-final. We'll be taking everything step by step. We are just planning on creating a fan base."
There are certain moments and events in life which remain in the treasure trove of our minds to be looked back on as the years pass by. One such moment is for sure Joe’s concert at The London Palladium this Sunday gone 31st May 2015.
On Sunday, social media had been awash with posts from Joe’s fans country and worldwide all heading to the same place, the world’s most famous theatre, a mecca for variety and entertainment The London Palladium. Fans and friends descending on the capital city to enjoy one of the landmark concerts in Joe’s life and pay tribute and true respect to a man who rose from humble beginnings to the heights of the show business ladder and remains today one of the UK’s greatest ever ‘LIVE’ entertainers.
The show opened with Ricky Tomlinson compering and introducing a highly talented group from Liverpool,‘UkeBox’ who were followed by West End Star Darren Day and comedian Johnnie Casson. A short interval followed, the second half opening with a guest appearance from Joe’s special friend Mr Jimmy Tarbuck with some great words about Joe, great to see Jimmy and the audience gave him a very warm welcome.
So, it was ‘curtain up’ and with the orchestra striking up on came Joe to be greeted with a huge roaring round of cheers and unending applause from the audience. Everyone on their feet to welcome this very celebrated and special gentleman to the stage, ‘his stage’. Joe dressed elegantly in black suit, crisp white shirt and black tie just beamed and stood immersing himself in a tidal wave of love and warmth which flowed towards him from the auditorium for some few moments, acknowledging everyone before going to the microphone.
The next hour and a half was a glittering master class in performance and excellence, Joe gave everything he had with a set list of his finest songs and tributes as he calls them, from Dame Shirley Bassey to Frank Sinatra, he never put a foot wrong all evening and gave his audience one of the finest performances of his career for sure. With Don Black and his family in the stalls Joe closed the show with Don’s song ‘If I Never Sing Another Song’ , the lyrics delivered as only Joe can, the crowd went wild at the end, as Joe reached the last notes, one almost felt the theatre elevating up into the West End sky with everyone on their feet cheering and applauding for this one special and distinguished man. Never was the saying ‘There’s Nothing Like A Joe Show’ more appropriate.
Notes of special thanks are extended to Mr Jimmy Tarbuck OBE, Ricky Tomlinson, Darren Day and Johnnie Casson. Thanks are also extended to MD Stephen Price and the orchestra and singers. Also Joe’s backstage crew who all came together for the show.
